Action Based Email 2008-03

Action Based Email

Merlin Mann presented a talked at Google in July 2007, Inbox Zero. Presentation is about 1 hour long - slides are available. Main ideas:

  • Process - respond (checking is not processing)
  • Delete
  • Archive (a single folder called _Done_ -- search works)
  • Respond (2 minute rule)
  • Defer
  • Do (remember advanced common sense)
  • Delegate

Other creative ideas:

  • Do email less
    • Check email much less than continuously. Twice a day? Once per hour?
  • Templates for standard responses, i.e. create a system
  • limit responses - 5 sentences

Follow-on Notes:

  • Action Lists are committments
  • Paper still works, ubiquitous capture device.
  • Figure out and apply Patterns
  • Inbox Zero series at 43 folders.

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
