- Everything Search Engine - leverages NTFS operating system info for lightning fast searches for file and folder names (not contents). "Everything" is an administrative tool that locates files and folders by filename instantly for Windows. Unlike Windows search "Everything" initially displays every file and folder on your computer (hence the name "Everything"). You type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed. 2009-02-21
Backup - considerations and research
There are many variables here. For starters - free storage space from MSFT Live Skydrive. Cheap storage from Amazon S3 (upload and store for one month 20GB = $5.00. 2nd month of storage only is about $3.00. My web host, 1 and 1, has password protected directories available in the home package with 120GB of space.
Options for backup include 2BrightSparks SyncBack, Jungle Disk, and back to my old reliable compression software (was WinZip, now may be 7Zip).
- GladiNet - network file connector, particularly good at giving access to SkyDrive and other free data sources.
- NetDrive - connects FTP and WebDAV remote storage like a local drive. Free for home use.
File Hamster for working file versioning. It automatically time stamps and stores copies each time you save, and it allows you to annotate each copy so that your revisions are fully documented.
-- file backup software, can be encrypted and compressed. Areca supports incremental, differential and full backups.
Hiking in Nashville, there are some amazing urban trails that are tucked in the middle of the city but give you the feeling of being away from it all.
