Aristotle on grading the severity of human misconduct

Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics presents three different evaluations of an injury.

  1. Mistakes - done in ignorance, where the agent did not intend to commit the injury. The origin of responsibility is the agent.
  2. Misadventure - the injury was caused by an event outside the control of the agent. The agent also did not intend to commit the injury.
  3. Injury - when the agent acts knowingly, but without premeditation, an act of temper or natural feelings.

The implied but missing 4th part is deliberate, purposeful wrongdoing.

Interesting to apply these four evaluations of a wrong to life events such as driving, plagiarism, leadership, or other human relations. The wrong can be evaluated in the context of intent and knowledge.

Planting trees

TLC for Trees gives extensive guidance on transplanting and caring for trees. Proper placement of the trunk flare was new information for me. Root ball placement, mulching, and fertilizing --- it is all here! Only after using the information did I realize that the source is just down the road at Tennessee Tech University.

Putting photos on the web

It is time for that Christmas letter and I need to put some photo's on the web. I had been thinking about doing this within PMWiki - but changing my mind today and going for the web based viewer option. A couple of choices:

  1. JAlbum which will win I think! User developed skins are the tipping point, very flexible and creative. Need to start by organizing the photo's into folders as an organizing method.
  2. Web Album Generator A great and simple program.

Cleaning the printhead on an inkjet printer

This is a frustrating exercise. Trying to print the last Christmas letters and back to the bands of dark/light in pictures printed on our 6 year old Canon i560s. There is a maintenance function with cleaning cycles, and print head checks - but nothing is really helping. And trying to remember what I did last time isn't helping either!

The print head is easily removable after taking out the 4 color cartridges. Now what will it be: hot water? Windex? Alcohol? I've already tried the clean cotton cloth wiping routine.
