Originality does not consist in saying what no one has ever said before, but in saying exactly what you think yourself.

Creating Videos to explain concepts

Screen capture video is a great tool for explaining in words and pictures a concept, a series of steps, or to provide a demonstration. The objective is to narrate either a PowerPoint or a series of steps in a software application.

I was back to this point again today trying to put together some explanations of flowcharting concepts. It is important to emphasize just a couple of guidelines to make flowcharts more understandable. I've used Camtasia to create videos but today I was searching for quick and easy rather than powerful and feature filled. Another objective is that the resulting video file be somewhat small and capable of serving from a web site. SWF and FLV are my preferred video formats for this. Another secret is that I would like to do the capture without editing and focus on short.

Multitasking

Article in the NY Times, Multitasking Can Make You Lose ... Um ... Focus, 10/24/2008. Since the 1990s, we’ve accepted multitasking without question. ... While multitasking may seem to be saving time, psychologists, neuroscientists and others are finding that it can put us under a great deal of stress and actually make us less efficient. More than a gentle reminder that the feeling of overload is probably something that we have self-imposed by attempting to do to many things at a time. Learning to create boundaries and how to single-task may be the best way to get back to life before overload. Do one thing at a time and do it well, with full concentration. 10/27/08

Publication that matters

Another article in the NY Times, If No One Sees It, Is It an Invention??, 10/26/2008. After posting his ideas and inventions on YouTube which resulted in millions of views, Mr. Lee commented Sharing an idea the right way is just as important as doing the work itself. ... If you create something but nobody knows, it’s as if it never happened.

And then the elegant quote from the NY Times on publication: Contrast this with what might have followed from other options Mr. Lee considered for communicating his ideas. He might have published a paper that only a few dozen specialists would have read. A talk at a conference would have brought a slightly larger audience. In either case, it would have taken months for his ideas to reach others.

Ouch - now that is something to think about!! 10/27/08

Another online music alternative

ReverbNation organizes independent music in a professional manner. Easy to listen to online player that follows you from screen to screen, rather than cutting out at each change. I found this resource from Dancing Light, based in Walker, MN (brr, the chill must be getting pretty thick at the end of Oct!), on Twitter.
