Data Backup ideas - A key concept is the 3-2-1 Rule

  • 3 – Keep 3 copies of any important file: 1 primary and 2 backups.
  • 2 – Keep the files on 2 different media types to protect against different types of hazards.
  • 1 – Store 1 copy offsite

Types of Backups

This could be a long section, but I'll build it with only the basics. Starting with a June 2017 posting by BackBlaze on the difference between Sync vs. Backup vs. Storage

Cloud Backup

  • JungleDisk cost about $4 / month for 10GB Additional storage is $0.15 per GB per month (9/2017)
  • BackBlaze cost $5 per month for unlimited storage on one computer
  • Amazon S3 pricing is more complicated but the first 5GB is free. Then the next 50TB per month (yes TB!) starts at $0.023 per GB for standard, about half of that for infrequent access storage at $0.0125 per GB, and a huge drop down to $0.004 per GB for glacier storage.
  • SyncBack is a tool that I've used over the years. Software for easy sync on a pc. Could also use for control with Amazon S3.
  • Google Drive and Cloud, Microsoft OneDrive, Amazon Prime for photos, DropBox, FTP to a server, external hard drives, and the list goes on and on.
