Database NormalizationRules of Data Normalization from DataModel.org - clear and concise examples of moving through the normalization process using member and software example. I like the initial dataset which includes comma separate values in a single column (field). 3 Normal Forms Tutorial - data is based on sales invoices. Not as clear in the atomic definition of data in a field (discusses the idea but the figures don't support the concept clearly). But the movement to 2NF and 3NF are excellent from a business event processing perspecitive. The resulting tables are Customer, Inventory, Orders, and Order Items. Good business example! Wikipedia entry - although Wikipedia continues to be criticized as somewhat non-academic, technical entries seem to be well constructed. The visual examples of anomoly problems are particularly helpful. 5 Rules of Data Normalization Poster - although aging a bit (1989), this poster captures the essentials in a single page PDF. Remove Duplicates in Excel - a critical task in the data normalization process involves removing duplicate records as you split out the data into separate tables. Excel 2007 has some new and very slick one step methods built in. The linked page includes both the "old" methods and the new Excel 2007 methods for removing duplicate records. The "Remove Duplicates icon" is fast ... but be careful what fields you want duplicates removed from. Hint: make a backup copy of your file first!! 9-19-2007
