Measurement

The 7 Deadly Sins of Performance Measurement and How to Avoid Them, Michael Hammer, Sloan Management Review, Spring 2007

Part of a special report on "Measuring to Manage". Asserts that most companies use operational metrics that make very little sense. The seven deadly sins are:
  1. Vanity - choose measures that make us look good
  2. Provincialism - use of organizational boundaries to set metrics
  3. Narcissism - from "our" point of view
  4. Laziness - assume we already know what to measure rather than studying what should be measured
  5. Pettiness - measuring only a small component of what matters
  6. Inanity - no consideration for consequences of measurements on human behavior
  7. Frivolity - surface issues taking the attention rather than getting to root causes
